I'm changing my format. I'm listing what I've read since the beginning of the year; most recent on top.

I was just informed that someone actually reads this (Hi Alice!), so I figured I'd better update. It always feels like I'm missing things, though.

Recommended Books:
I'm not gonna give plotlines because it'll take too long, and you can always go look on Amazon.
Anything by Jonathan Carroll (notably From the Teeth of Angels, Outside the Dog Museum, Child Across the Sky, A, Land of Laughs, The, Sleeping in Flame, more) Carroll, Jonathan This is my favorite author. That's about all I can say. Go check out this website.
Perfume Suskind, Patrick
The Harry Potter books Rowling, J. K. Really very much fun. I love!
Geek Love Dunn, Katherine I gave this at the book party a few years ago...
Secret History, The Tartt, Donna ... this one, too. And Donna Tartt has finally, FINALLY come out with a new novel!!! Yea!!! It's about time!!!
Wrinkle in Time, A L'Engle, Madeleine I got this book from RIF (that would be "Reading is FUNdamental," for those of who who didn't grow up within the Dallas school system) in the 4th grade and really, still nothing can touch it.
Art of Coarse Acting, The Green, Michael Hi-freaking-larious. If you are any sort of actor you MUST find a copy of this and read it. There's also a rugby one.
Beach, The Garland, Alex Yeah, I know, Leo was in the movie; the book was excellent.
Doomsday Book Willis, Connie

She is such a fantastic and varied writer and this is such a beautiful and well-written book. And it's sci-fi! Yee-Haw!

Good Omens Gaiman, Neil and Pratchett, Terry A very funny book about the Apocalypse.
the Alvin Maker Series Card, Orson Scott These are excellent. They are historical fiction about the beginnings of America.
Interpreter of Maladies Lahiri, Jhumpa I usually don't like short stories, and I don't remember why I even picked this up in the first place, but I loved this book. Interesting and funny and well-written.
Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, The Chabon, Michael EXCELLENT!!! This is the BEST book I've read in a long time. I doubt I'll read anything better this year.

Lamb : The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal Moore, Christopher This is probably the funniest book I've ever read.

Forever: A Novel Hamil, Pete This is a beautiful book which blends historical information about Manhattan with fiction.

This list gets more and more pointlesss, because I never stick to it. Oh well. Here it is, anyway.

This is pretty much everything. Recommendations welcome. I'll get to all of them eventually (I don't necessarily go in order). I am not including books from the book party lists (unless the book is actually sitting on my nightstand), because those are listed here.

Ender's Shadow Card, Orson Scott recommended by Dave

Our Book Party

This Book Party thing started FOURTEEN years ago in Minneapolis. We were looking for a unique holiday party idea and came up with this. Here's what happens:

  • Everyone brings a wrapped copy of their favorite book, or a favorite book... whatever you've read that you'd want someone else to read. We've had everything from Goodnight Moon to Atlas Shrugged; cookbooks, blank books- everything. It doesn't matter if the book is new or used, but YOU MUST HAVE ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK.
  • All of the books go into a basket and after everyone arrives and is settled in with their food and drink, the basket is passed and everyone takes a book.
  • Someone is chosen to start, and they unwrap their book. The giver of that book identifies themselves and tells briefly why they chose to bring that particular book.
  • The giver of the book then opens the book they've chosen from the basket, and on until all the books are opened.
  • If someone opens a book they've already read, they can trade with whoever's willing once all the books are opened. THIS IS NOT A WHITE ELEPHANT PARTY. Please bring a book you'd actually want someone else to read.

It's very cool because you get a pre-screened book, as well as a list for the coming year (I post them on my website). We love it and always have a lot of nice wine and food. And people, of course!
